 Rio de Janeiro - Corcovado

The 38 meters height postcard of Rio de Janeiro had your fundamental rock launched on 1922 and its inauguration was on 1931 October, 21.

The Cristo Redentor, symbol of Rio de Janeiro city, was elected as one of the seven new wonders of the world between 21 other worldwide monuments on an internet and mobile messages voting which was organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation from Switzerland.

And that choice was deserved. From its 38 meters – and 710 meters from Corcovado hill – the Cristo Redentor is the faith and appreciation image of Rio de Janeiro’s habitants, and had completed 76 years in 2007. Since 2000 when it received new illumination, the monument and its access has going through a revitalizing process. The highest point was the inauguration of mechanized access in 2002 with panoramic elevators and escalators. Thus, there’s no need to face the 220 steps that lead to the statue’s foot.

The Cristo Redentor now counts with three panoramic elevators which one with capacity for 14 people. The access is given by an area that serves both visitants that come by car and the ones that arrive by Corcovado’s railway. Also metallic footbridges was built, supported by another structure, with about four meters of width and four escalators, having a traffic capacity for nine thousand people per hour. The ride starts there because the 31 meters height tower will reveal the first city’s view. To complete the statue access, four escalators were installed.

And even before getting the Cristo Redentor, the visitants can already know a little about the postcard story. The Cosme Velho Station, totally revitalized, has become a comfortable environment of leisure and modern entertainment. A new boarding area was built besides of touristic support stores, VIP rooms and auditoriums. The great highlight is the Espaço Cultural where all the rich story of the Railway and the Cristo Redentor perpetuates.
