| Rio de Janeiro - Others - Maracanã Stadium |
Maracanã was built to host the 1950’s FIFA World Cup. Officially, the stadium’s
name is “Jornalista Mário Filho”, in homage to the most famous sports chronicler of that time, brother of Nelson Rodrigues and founder of the
"Jornal dos Sports". Maracanã is so popular that may be considered one of the symbols of Rio de Janeiro, as well as Corcovado and Pão de
Açúcar.
Although the inauguration of the stadium has happened in 1950’s June, with a match
between teams representing the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the job was totally concluded only a decade after this, in 1965. It
occupied the position of world’s largest stadium for several years and has a 110 m x 75 m soccer field.
Maracanã also has a Fame Hall, built to homage 50 players that achieved distinction
in matches realized there, among them, Zico, Garrincha and Romário. On the side of the stadium are the Gilberto Cardoso Gymnasium - the
"Maracanãzinho", which is used to other sport competitions and shows, the Track Field Stadium “Célio de Barros” and the Aquatic Conjunct "Júlio
Delamare".
