| Rio de Janeiro - Cultural Centers - Paço Imperial |
One of the principal Cultural Centers of Rio de Janeiro was the residence of the
vice-regals of Brazil, headquarters of the governments of the Kingdom and of the Empire and even the mail and telegraph office. It's no wonder
that the Paço Imperial is part of the history of Brazil. It was built in 1743, but it was only in the decade of the 80's that is became a center
of exhibitions and cultural events.
The Brazilian history is represented in the Paço Imperial in exhibitions of art,
plays, concerts and by a library as well. The Paulo Santo Library, located on the first floor, has a collection of arounf]d six thousand volumes,
the majority of them on Portuguese-Brazilian art and architecture. Besides being an atmosphere of leisure, the Paço Imperial is also a center
for studying and for research.
The Paço Imperial unites the old and the new, in other words, it preserves the old
Brazilian art and shows each step in its contemporany evolution. The junction of the old with the present is one of the principal characteristics,
because the visitors can appreciate the beauty of each work of art and still perceive the difference that exists between them in a clear and
cultural way.
It is the right place for those who don't have any idea on what to do on Saturdays
and Sundays and during the work, as well. In the Paço Imperial, there are various choices of entertainment and recreation like cinema, theatre,
music, art exhibition, restaurants, library and also shops for those who like to go shopping and, at the same time, appreciate the culture. Many
works of art enrich the Paço Imperial, among the most outstanding is a sculpture by Aleijadinho, that is one of the most attractive.
