When the gold of the mountains in Minas Gerais started to deplete, in the
19th century, there was an abandonment of the settlements that based their economies in the precious metal. For a long time, the
small cities lived practically isolated, without attracting either visitors or economic investment.
The disinterest brought an advantage: for not growing too much in the past, these
locations succeeded to preserve the most important, which is the artistic and architectonical collection of the colonial era. Today, more than
two hundred years have passed until cities reacquire the historic importance got discovered by tourists.
Sabará is among the cities that were prominent in the peak of the gold exploration.
That’s why it has, today, an impressive architectonical set of small palaces and churches, dated from the 18th century. There are
slopes, stone walkways and houses of the colonial era, which transmits to visitors the sensation of going back on time.
Actually, although Sabará assumed modern traces, the old historic center is still
well preserved. The main prominence is Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which has works of Antonio Francisco Lisboa, also known as Aleijadinho.
Other attractions are the old “Casa da Intendência” and “Casa de Fundição”, the buildings of Dom Pedro II street and “Museu do Ouro”. By walking
through the city streets, it’s common to find ruins of old buildings.
It’s interesting to visit the city at any time of the year, but those who don’t
like crowded place should avoid carnaval and Semana Santa, when all historic cities of Minas Gerais get awfully crowded. Sabará is 25 km away
from Belo Horizonte.
