Nossa Senhora da Conceição Matrix |
The documents related with the church’s construction were destroyed, then, it’s
impossible to determine the date of the work and the name of the project’s author. There’s only theories that the church was built by
portugueses in 1700, approximately.
The decoration of the sanctuary was responsibility of Padre José de Queiroz de
Coimbra, priest of the church for sixty years. There are few documents of 1753 that prove the request done by the vicar of six silver candle
sticks and a crucifix, from Lisbon.
In 1822, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Matrix was very well decorated, with valuable
pieces. The facade is made of wood, has ample Windows and presents the church’s symbol in worked iron. Inside, the golden carvings, which does
a mixing of various phases of the baroque art, involves the church calling attention of visitors.
Many paintings are found inside the chapel, among them “mistérios do Rosário”,
where the drawings are much more elaborated. In the sacristy, there are panels which pictures the New Testament and, as well as Nossa Senhora
do Ó Church, brings elements of oriental influence on its decoration.
Some pieces were restored in 1964, as well as the doors and choral, framed in
gold, making it more beautiful. Nossa Senhora da Conceição Matrix and all its patrimony is registered as National Art and History Patrimony by
IPHAN.
