Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church |
Church Nossa Senhora do Carmo was constructed in 1763, after initiative of Ordem Terceira do Carmo. It was known as Ordem
dos Homens Brancos for not allowing the presence of black people on their celebrations.
Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church has pulpits and images carved in wood and façade
made in soapstone. Tells the history that, during the work, the façade was changed sometimes. In that time, an artist called Antônio Francisco
Lisboa was present in the Works to opine about it. But, of course, Antônio Lisboa, or Aleijadinho, ended up doing part of the work, leaving his
art in the history of the church and the city.
The church has square towers with a single nave. It’s covered with painted planks
and still keeps the panels which illustrate Elias being taken to heaven on a fire chariot, authorship of Joaquim Gonçalves da Rocha. The main
prominences of the church are the panels with images of São João da Cruz and São Simão Stock, on the altars, and the carvings in rococo and
baroque style, all over the church.
