Sabará - Church - Nossa Senhora do Ó Church

Nossa Senhora do Ó Church

Nossa Senhora do Ó Church

Church Nossa Senhora do Ó was built in 1717 at the request of women devotees of Nossa Senhora da Expectação do Parto, which demanded to the Council Chamber of Sabará lands, so the work could be done. Years later, by order of captain Lucas Ribeiro de Almeida, the chapel was enlarged.

In the church’s interior there are some rich elements of the Chinese culture, through baroque details in the carvings of Dom João V style, in red and blue, mixed with golden.

The name origin comes from the "antífonas", small verses sang before and after the psalms, declaimed on Christmas nights. These verses are always followed by an "Oh..." from the devotees.
