Sabará - Church - São Francisco de Assis Church

São Francisco de Assis Church

São Francisco de Assis Church

São Francisco de Assis Church construction started in 1781, where formerly there was a Nossa Senhora Rainha dos Anjos Chapel. The works were extended to 1822, when modifications were still being done at the “cantaria”. Despite the delay, the ornamenting is still not finished, maybe due to the building’s grandiosity.

The different kinds of materials used in the structure came from carious locations, as well as the professionals who worked in the construction. The façade was made in stone. The temple windows are ample.

In the major chapel there are drawings of Nossa Senhora Rainha dos Anjos and the figures of Evangelistas. In the altar there are painted images of São Francisco. Besides nice paintings, the church has statues of Senhor Morto, São Francisco de Assis and Nossa Senhora Rainha dos Anjos, all registered by IPHAN as national patrimony.
