Municipal Theatre

Sabará Ópera House, today known as Municipal Theatre, is one of the most important works of the city. Inaugurated in the middle of 1819, it’s up to nowadays stage for events and spectacles. The facade is simple and the precinct remembers a colonial house, without calling much attention.

The architectonical style follows the shaped used in the construction of English theaters during the rule of Elizabeth I, that’s why it’s also called Teatro Elizabetano, but the stage and audience dimensions shows characteristics similar to those found in Italian theaters. It has three floors with 47 staterooms, all of them with structure and wood decoration.

In the 20th century, Sabará Ópera House was transformed in Cine-Teatro, before being completely abandoned. Only in the end of the 60’s, the government restored and reopened the place, becoming then Sabará Municipal Theatre.

Municipal Theatre is registered as National Art and History Patrimony by IPHAN.
