The oldest thermal waters resort of Brazil, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz is located
less than an hour away from Florianópolis. About 70% of the area of the city is covered by Mata Atlântica, what provides nice landscapes and
climate always refreshing, despite the proximity to the coast side.
The water of the fountains spurts at a temperature of 41.5ºC and has relaxing and
therapeutic properties. The thermal complex was created by Dom João VI, in the beginning of the 19th century, and was frequented even by Emperor
Dom Pedro II and his wife Dona Teresa Cristina. By the way, it was from where the name of the city came, in honor to the Empress. Those who want
to know the resort can stay at the hotels. Some of them have thermal water in the rooms.
Other attraction of Santo Amaro da Imperatriz is Serra do Tabuleiro State Park,
which is the biggest natural reserve of the State of Santa Catarina. There it’s possible to practice several extreme sports, especially cycling,
trekking and alpinism. In the city, it is worth to look companies specialized in rafting at Cubatão River, which offers different difficulty
levels on its course. The river also forms “Salto do Rio Cubatão”, a 3 meters high waterfall.
In the city’s surroundings there are other waterfalls, like Cobrinha de Ouro
Waterfall, formed by a set of waterfalls, and “Salto do Rio Matias”, 60 meters high. But it’s not only from the water that Santo Amaro da
Imperatriz lives. It also offers the best conditions for hang gliding in the entire State of Santa Catarina.
