Luz Station |
Luz Station was constructed in the period of 1895 and 1900, to substitute the old
station next to it that couldn’t stand the passengers and goods demand anymore. At that time, the station was the main link between São Paulo
and Santos to transport the coffee cargoes, moving around about 6 tons of coffee per year.
The works exceeded the estimated budget and even provoked the bankrupt of some
companies sponsoring the construction of the new building. Ironically, two days after the finish of the works, the station suffered a major fire
that destroyed great part of the place. Just after being finished, “Estação da Luz” was restored, this time with government funding. The station
is considered one of the most beautiful of São Paulo and a great mark in the history of São Paulo’s economic development. It also has a replica
of London’s Big Bang.
Luz Station is registered as State historic patrimony by Condephaat.
