CARNIVAL
(Carnaval)
Carnival
is the biggest meeting of popular culture of Brazil besides soccer, a mix between
art and folklore. In the begining it was a street party that was held on
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Lent. (the 40 days of reflection reserved by
Catholicism to prepare for Christ’s death celebration). Carnival balls are
presented in clubs starting one week before on Friday and parades are held from
Friday through Tuesday at the “Sambodromo”. The winners make a new presentation
on Saturday after carnival.
Prefered rhythms are samba, marchinha, marcha-rancho, the pernambucano frevo and the "trio
eletricos" baianos (fricote, deboche, timbalada, axe music etc.). |
