Municipal Theatre |
São Paulo’s Municipal Theatre is one of the most imposing buildings of the city
and is quite similar to Opera Theatre of Paris. The works started in 1903 and were finished only in 1911, when the
Theatre was inaugurated with
the play “Hamlet”, of Shakespeare.
Projected by Ramos de Azevedo, the theatre has a main hall with capacity for 1550
people. The main chandelier has 260 lamps and 6 thousand crystal pieces. The ceiling’s painting is from artist Oscar Pereira da Silva and the
parapets are covered with gold.
The legend says that the Municipal Theatre was created by the aristocrats that
wanted to remove the small and rural image of São Paulo, putting it on a fine and big city level for European patterns.
