Capoeira

Two pairs of capoeira fighters dominate the stage showing the art brought by the africans during the epoch of Brazil-Colony, when the slaves were obliged to take care of plantations and farms for the landlords. As a way of defending themselves, it was created, among the slaves, a kind of fight, disguised as a dance, called “capoeira”.

Today, capoeira is the very symbol of the culture of Bahia and is considered the unique martial art genuinely brazilian, having as main instruments the “berimbau”, “pandeiro” and “atabaque”. Together they sing rigmaroles, which honor “orixás” and legendary capoeira fighters. With capoeira, “Maculelê” can also be seen as one of the ways the blacks have found to tell their history, with choreographies full of acrobatic jumps and a fight with machetes. Usually, this kind of show excites the spectators due to the sparkling that fly over the stage when the blades touch each other.
