Butantan Institute

Snake poison collect |
Butantan Institute was founded in 1901 by scientist and medic Vital Brasil.
Prominence to the “Serpentário”, which is an area where a great variety of brazilian serpents, and some other found in other countries, are
exposed at open air. It also has a spiders and scorpions display.
There are three museums there: “Biológico”, “Histórico” and “Rua”, which receives
annually 500 thousand people. “Museu Biológico” is one of the few in the world to exhibit living animals, poisonous or not. There are animals
coming not only from the brazilian fauna, but also from other regions of the planet. “Museu Histórico” exhibits objects and photos of the
beginning of “Instituto Butantan”, where Vital Brasil started the researches. “Museu de Rua” is the main grove of Butantan Park, where
sporadically there are photo exhibitions.
Instituto Butantan and the surrounding green area are registered by Condephaat as
historic and landscape patrimony.
