Municipal Market |
Also called “Mercadão”, the Municipal Market is one of the oldest commercial
establishments in São Paulo’s downtown. Idealized by architect Ramos de Azevedo, the famous facades of the building, made in gothic style, are
works of Felisberto Ranzini. It has 55 stained glasses that allow natural light to enter in the building.
Inaugurated in 1933, the market was erected at the margins of Tamanduateí River, so
it could receive cargo embarkations. It was projected to host dealers who were selling their goods in open air.
Those visiting the market can find practically everything, from fruits and
vegetables to fishes, chicken, herbs and seeds. The building is also known for hosting snack bars and other establishments serving traditional
foods of other regions of Brazil.
