 São Paulo - Typical Food

São Paulo is really the capital of gastronomy. It’s not by chance, since no other brazilian city has so many restaurants as São Paulo, and even gets close to the variety of São Paulo’s cuisine. But it’s necessary to make clear that the plurality of flavors comes from dishes brought with immigrants, who mixed their cultures and transformed the food in something completely new.

There are almost 12500 establishments and about 46 national and international gastronomic specialties. And the best part is that people can’t get worried with the time the hunger comes since most of the places are open 24 hours or, at least, until the last costumer.

The italians constitute one of the main immigrants colonies in São Paulo and were the greatest responsible by the dissemination of "eating pleasure" sat by the table when the family gathers to taste pasta with tomato sauce, olive oil and wine. In São Paulo, there are many restaurants that offer the traditional italian dishes and, at any corner of the city it’s possible to find strong representatives of the typical italian cuisine: the pizzas, capable of surprise even the italians due to the variety of flavors found in the city.

Besides going to these restaurants, other opportunity to taste the italian delicacies are the parties organized by the Italian colony. The most famous is “Festa de Nossa Senhora Achiropita”, at Bexiga district, in which there are several stalls selling typical food, from pasta to pizza.

The oriental food can be found at “Liberdade”, district where most of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean immigrants adopted when arrived to Brazil. The japanese cuisine is quite wanted for being light and healthy. Today, it’s common to go to japanese restaurants to eat sushis, sukyaki, etc. As well as the japanese, the portuguese also appreciate fishes, but they are prepared on a completely different way. The most traditional portuguese dishes are the soups, “bacalhau” and wine.

Besides italians, the Brás and Bom Retiro districts are also old arab districts. Although having abolished the religious habits, the language and the clothes of their homeland, the feeding habits, today are quite disseminated. In São Paulo there are many restaurants, and even arabian fast-foods.

So, in São Paulo, visitors can find any kind of food, from the simpler to the most sophisticated, transforming the city into a gastronomic center not only in Brazil, but from the whole world. The specialty doesn’t really matter, because in no other place there are so many options capable of pleasing all pockets and tastes.
