Sé Cathedral |
The construction of Sé Cathedral with the actual gothic architecture started in
1913 to substitute the small matrix church of the city, which occupied the same place. The cathedral was inaugurated only in 1954 still
unfinished: 14 towers of the original project weren’t constructed. Besides the lack of budgets, what contributed for the inauguration of the
church before the finish of the construction were the celebrations of the 400 anniversary of São Paulo. Only in 1999, the church passed through
a restoration and, finally, the works were concluded.
It’s not by chance that Sé Cathedral is considered one of the five biggest gothic
temples of the world. The height of the church is equal to the size of a 20 story buildings and has capacity to 8000 people. More than 50 stained
glasses allow the entrance of natural light in the interior of the temple, which has final touch made in rare marble.
The biggest organ of Brazil is in Sé Cathedral. It was constructed in the decade
of 1950, has five manual keyboards, 329 commands, 120 registers and 12000 pipes. The mouths are in gothic style and present hand carved details.
The bells of the church are located in the left tower, where there’s a carillon of 61 bronze bells, 35 of them electronically started.
