São Bento Monastery |
São Bento Monastery is located in the historic center of São Paulo. Among the main
attractions of the place there are the masses accompanied with gregorian songs, at Sundays, and the art works, most of them dated from the
17th and 18th centuries. Also prominence for the organ, which has four keyboards, pedals and six thousand pipes. It’s
considered one of the main great pipe organs of Brazil.
Founded in the beginning of the 16th century, São Bento Monastery passed
through a reform in 1650 by order of Fernão Dias Pais, known as "caçador de esmeraldas" (emerald hunter), buried in the chapel. Since
then, the church passed through other reforms and the actual architecture is dated from 1910. Actually, the benedictine set includes “Basílica de
Nossa Senhora da Assunção”, the monastery and “Colégio de São Bento”, historic, cultural and tour mark of great importance.
