Pátio do Colégio |
“Pátio do Colégio” is a really important historic complex for São Paulo. It’s one
of the marks of the foundation of São Paulo and hosts “Colégio dos Jesuítas”, Padre Anchieta Museum, auditorium “Manoel da Nóbrega”, Tenerife
Gallery, “Praça Ilha Canário”, Beato José de Anchieta Chapel, where the mortal remains and the cloak of José de Anchieta are kept, “Cripta
Tibiriçá” and a library. In the museum, there are baroque images from the 17th and 18th centuries, besides a baptism sink that belonged
to the first church of the Jesuit School, made in the 16th century.
The Jesuit School was inaugurated in 1556, two years later after the arrival of
the Jesuits and the first mass celebrated there. The building already passed through some modifications, as in the epoch in which it served as
residence of the bishop and the governor between the years of 1759 and 1765. Some time later it was used as foundry and only then it was donated
to Companhia de Jesus, which reconstructed the building.
