São João Del Rei - Historical Buildings - Baroness Mansion

Itaverava Baroness Mansion

Itaverava Baroness Mansion

The house, built in the middle of 1800 carries strong architectonic traces, including the rooftop and the ample balcony. It carries this name because it served as residence to baroness Ana Eugenia.

The building belonged to Pedro de Alcântara de Almeida. It was sold in 1877, being announced in the epoch newspapers as a "big and pretty house at Largo do Carmo". Years later, the house returned to the newspapers, this time due to a fire, which ruined a shoes fabric located in the first floor.

Besides the shoes fabric, the building also housed an Army HQ, Conceição High School and also served as hotel to the italian immigrants in the middle of 1888. Nowadays, it houses the executive directory of Funrei - Fundação de Ensino Superior de São João del Rei, and the Centro Cultural, which has an auditorium and an art gallery with permanent exhibits.
