Catedral Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Pilar |
In the place where Catedral Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Pilar is today, there
was a little chapel, built in homage to the saint. The actual church started to be constructed in 1721, when a fire destroyed the small
sanctuary.
The actual facade is not the original. It follows the neoclassical style and was
constructed in 1830, when the cathedral passed through an enlargement reform. The interior of the church has baroque characteristics, with
paintings and sculptures ornamented with gold. The altars have silver lamps from the middle of the 18th century, besides two huge portuguese
panels that shows "A Santa Ceia" and "Jesus na Casa do Fariseu", both dated from 1730.
Catedral Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Pilar is registered by Instituto do
Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Brasileiro (IPHAN) as national historic patrimony.
