São João Del Rei - Church - INossa Senhora do Carmo Church

INossa Senhora do Carmo Church

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church was inaugurated in 1734, but the Works were only finished in 1824, after innumerous reforms and redefinitions of the original design. The actual façade is dated from 1787. It’s sculpted in stone, with the saint’s image surrounded by angels.

The towers have octagonal shape, with gaps in the corners, which is rare in colonial constructions. Two paintings from 1879 adorn the interior: "Transfiguração" and "Arrebatação de Santo Elias". The wooden sculpture "Cristo Inacabado", by Aleijadinho, served as reference to the construction of Cristo Redentor, in Rio de Janeiro. It’s considered unfinished because it doesn’t have the arms.

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church is registered by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) as national patrimony.
