São João Del Rei - Church - São Francisco de Assis Church

São Francisco de Assis Church

Capela-mor of São Francisco de Assis Church

Capela-mor

São Francisco de Assis Church construction started in 1774 and was finally inaugurated in 1804. The palm trees planted in the garden form an interesting set with the facade of the sanctuary.

As most of the colonial period temples, the church has seven altars. Rubies, representing blood drops, ornament the main altar crucifix. The chandelier of the major chapel is made of colored crystal.

The church’s land is demarcated by small white marble pillars, brought from Portugal. The rampart is ornamented with blue stones, even around the large iron gate. Former president Tancredo Neves is buried in the cemetery in the back of the church.

São Francisco de Assis Church is registered as national patrimony by IPHAN.
