São João Del Rei - Casa de Pedra

Old Railroad

Remains of the Old Railroad that passed by Casa de Pedra Station.

In the beginning, Casa de Pedra was the name of a cave. But, in the end of 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad in São João Del Rei, close to the cave, a quarry and a railroad station had been built, which adopted the same name. Today, in the station, operates a small museum, which shows to visitors some of the mining history in the region through old objects.

Visitors may also take a ride in the steam locomotives. The route between São João Del Rei and Tiradentes is still in operation and the ride is promoted by Ferrovia Centro Atlântica.

The cave, in the left bank of Rio das Mortes, is made of limestone rock and is 600 meters long, divided in five halls. It’s protected by APP - Área de Proteção Permanente.
