Snow covers the Praça Cesário Amarante, São Joaquim's Downtown

Praça Cesário Amarante, São Joaquim's Downtown

Ecotourism, apples and snow - yes, snow. The combination of attractions makes São Joaquim the ideal destination for those who want to try the european atmosphere without leaving Brazil. It’s known as one of the coldest cities of Brazil, side by side to Urubici, which has the apples and rural and adventure tourism as the main economic activities.

For being located at “Serra Catarinense”, where there are mountains of almost 2000 m², São Joaquim offers uncountable attractions for extreme sport lovers. There are lots of canyons, stone walls and impressive rock formations around the city, without mentioning the rivers of crystal clear waters and waterfalls standing more than 100 meters tall, everything framed by “Araucária” woods. In the city, it’s worth to visit “Parque Ecológico Snow Valley”, with sensational trails and belvederes.

It snows, invariably, every year in São Joaquim. The landscape acquires a color mainly whitish, due to the snows that freezes the trees and cover the ceilings. Everything can be seen in the interior of comfortable rooms, in resorts and farm hotels, where tourists find enough food and other typical attractions, like horse rides and fishing on regional rivers. The cities of Urubici, São Joaquim, Lages and Bom Jardim da Serra are responsible for the third biggest production of trout in Brazil.

If during winter São Joaquim is a sure destination for those who enjoy coldness, during summer it’s also wonderful. Between September and March is the fruit harvest season. Besides apples, there are guavas, kiwis, pears, grapes and prunes. To deserve the title of National Capital of Apples, which São Joaquim rivals with other locations of Santa Catarina, São Joaquim organizes every year “Festa Nacional da Maçã”, when it’s visited by an average of 100000 people, during the 10 days of the festival. Tourists participate in musical and folklore shows, and have the opportunity of buying typical craftsmanship and, of course, taste delicacies made with fruits.

Although fewer divulged, there are also apiaries in São Joaquim. The quality of the honey produced in the region made the location a meeting point of international apiarian.
