Apple Tree used in reseach |
If you’re curious about how the researches on use of new techniques and products
for plantation and harvesting are done, a good option is to take a visit to “Estação Experimental Epagri” (Epagri Experimental Station). Located
2 km away from São Joaquim’s downtown, the place makes visitors to be in touch with modern equipments and scientific advances used in the fields
and animal breeding.
It was created in the end of the 60’s by the State Government of Santa Catarina
to support the agriculture in the region, sponsoring studies for genetic improvements and development of new species, especially apples. Actually,
the State is responsible for more than half of the national production of apples.
Tourists arriving to Epagri can see cherry, apple, peach and other trees with some
fruits, according to the season of the year. According to researchers, São Joaquim also has ideal climate conditions for the cultivation of
cabernet sauvignon grapes, used in the production of fine wines.
