Wall Tile of the Buldings |
Founded by french and occupied by dutchs before being submited to portuguese control,
São Luís preserves almost all the historical buildings since the 17th century. An impressive amount of story houses, small palaces and churches
keep the same original architecture, what makes the city a real museum of the colonial epoch.
The blocks keep the square shape with narrow streets. Most of the buildings are
short and with walls covered with hand painted glazed, which helped to keep the temperature pleasant at the interior of the constructions,
protecting them from the heat. The glazed tiles made São Luís known as the "Cidade de Porcelana (City of Ceramics)". Most of the roofs
are made of clay tiles.
The historic center of São Luís, besides being protected by IPHAN - Instituto do
Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, is also in the list of World Heritage of UNESCO. |
