Located in the historic center, Rua Portugal has historic story houses with façades
ornamented with portuguese glazed tiles. It’s the urban picture of the 19th century, with imposing houses and balconies protected by
iron grates, full of details.
On the 19th century, the main Portuguese companies were located there,
which nowadays have the real properties occupied by government offices, souvenir stores and also the Museum of Visual Arts. It was the first
street in São Luís to install an elevator, on a four floors story house of Martins Irmãos Company.
At Rua Portugal, permanent exhibits of arts occurs, with paintings and sculptures,
without counting the glazed tile samples dated from the 18th century, of Portuguese, French and german origins.
