São Luís - Historical Buildings - Leões Palace

Leões Palace

Leões Palace

It was the Frenchs who started to construct Palácio dos Leões, in 1612, homage to France’s king, Luis XIII. But, after the frenchs were expelled, it was the spanishs duty to finish the monument.

The truth is that the work was a former fortress, which served as basis to the palace of neoclassical architectonical style. The governor’s manor house begun started to be built only in 1761 and was finished in 1776. Since then, it passed through several reforms and enlargements.

The decoration of all halls of Palácio dos Leões is french, from the furniture to the chandeliers. Just one dinning room and the winter gardens have furniture from Portugal. Palácio dos Leões is the actual seat of Maranhão State Government.
