Catarina Mina Alley |
The street has this name in homage to afro-brazilian Catarina Rosa de Jesus
Ferreira. The beautiful slave saved the money she earned from lovers until buying her own freedom. Once freed, she begun to invest in real
properties and also bought her own slaves. Known by her sympathy, she paraded through São Luís aristocracy and was considered a great
lady.
In the place there’s a stairway with 35 wide steps, made of pedra de cantaria (an
ornamental stone). Actually, the alley has innumerous bars, where it’s possible to listen to reggae, a music style largely appreciated in the
city. Catarina Mina Alley is located in the district of Praia Grande, next to the hydro way terminal. |
