Cafuá das Mercês |
What today houses the center of preservation of the afro-memories, or Museu do Negro,
formerly was an old slave market. Cafuá das Mercês is a small story house that still keeps the original architectonical characteristics.
Without windows, only with little gaps for ventilation, the place had narrow
compartments distributed on the two floors. Slaves stayed in those rooms with plates hanging on their necks, indicating the price.
In the permanent exhibit, besides torture objects, there are also pieces of african
art and of Maranhão’s culture. At Cafuá das Mercês, a replica of the pelourinho that existed in the center of São Luís, can be found.
