| São Luís - Others - Gonçalves Dias Public Square |
The view to Baía de São Marcos is what most impresses those who pass through
Gonçalves Dias Public Square, in São Luís. It was inaugurated in 1973 with the name of the famous poet from Maranhão, who also received in his
homage a monument right in the center of the public Square.
For attracting couples in love who visit the place to appreciate the magnificent
sunset, the square is also known as Largo dos Amores and Largo dos Remédios, due to the church situated in front of it. Besides, Gonçalves Dias
Public Square was only built due to Church Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, protector of commerce and navigation, which was the first building in that
region of São Luís.
Gonçalves Dias Public Square is protected by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e
Artístico Nacional since 1955. |
