Fountain of Pedras |
Fountain of Pedras was built in the 17th century, but the actual façade
in portuguese colonial style is dated from 1832. It’s protected by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional since 1963 and there’s an
old gate that protects the entrance. The water gushes through sculptures carved in pedra lioz (ornamental stone).
The place has historical importance to the city. It was there that the troops
commanded by Jerônimo de Albuquerque, from Portugal) camped before the battle against the frenchs, led by La Ravardière, in 1615. Some years
later, in 1641, the waters of Fonte das Pedras were channeled by the dutch invaders, before being expelled.
