Sé Church |
Church of Sé Nossa Senhora da Vitória was inaugurated in 1619 with the objective of
strengthen the faith of those hit by smallpox, considered a plague at that time, under orders of 3rd captain Diogo Machado da Costa. Actually,
it’s called just Igreja da Sé or Catedral Metropolitana.
In 1687, the government allowed the cathedral to be reformed and the work was
finished only in the beginning of 1690. More than 70 years passed until the church was reformed again. But, as the last restoration was not well
executed, part of the church crumbled and had to be reconstructed. Today, Igreja da Sé has the shapes given to the building on the last
restoration, in 1922.
One of the outstanding points of the work is the major altar, dated from the
18th century, which was carved by Manuel Mansos (from Portugal) and is considered a relic of the brazilian baroque arts. The major
chapel ceiling paint, dated from 1954, is authorship of João de Deus.
Igreja da Sé is on the protected buildings list of Instituto do Patrimonio
Histórico e Artístico Nacional.
