São José do Desterro Church |
It’s known as the oldest church of São Luís. Its first construction is dated from
1618. It was sacked by the dutch army, commanded by Koin Anderson, who stole sacred gold and silver pieces. The church was reformed several times,
since all the invasions damaged heavily the building.
It’s located in the district of Desterro and was reformed with donations of the
residents, who know the historic importance of the building, considered the only one in Brazil with traces of the Byzantine architecture. Today
it houses a museum of sacred arts. |
