Remédios Church |
In gothic style, "Remédios Church" was built in 1719 as a chapel. In 1775 it became
a church, until the time decaying caused deterioration of its structure. It had to be reformed in 1798, by Francisco Xavier, who realized the
work with the donations of the faithful.
The last reform was done in 1860. Actually, Igreja dos Remédios is considered one
of the most beautiful and well-preserved churches of São Luís. Says the story that the church gave the name to the districtwhere it is located,
formerly known as Ponta do Romeu.
It’s in front of Praça Gonçalves Dias, which is also known as Largo dos Remédios
exactly because of the sanctuary.
