Mercês Conventry
Busto de José Sarney |
Priest Antônio Vieira, to host Ordem dos Mercedários at Praia Grande, raised Mercês
Church and Conventry in 1654. Today, Fundação da Memória Republicana (Republican Memory Foundation), Memorial José Sarney (José Sarney Memorial),
Centro Modelador de Pesquisa da História Republicana (Modeling Center of Republican History Reseach) and Instituto da Amizade dos Povos de Língua
Portuguesa (Friendship of Portuguese Language People Institute) operates there.
In the beginning, the rooms were made of straw and mud walls, but, as time passed
by, the construction was remodeled with more resistant materials, and, with that, the building gained bigger proportions.
The government took the place in 1905, realizing new reforms so the building could
host the Fire Department and Police Station. The government also inverted the entrances of the building, formerly facing the seaside. As years
passed, another reform was done and then, the memorials, which are now working there, opened to public.
There are some photos and objects of José Sarney, former president of Brazil.
