| São Luís - Churches - São Pantaleão Church |
One of the oldest temples in São Luís, it was built in 1780 by Pantaleão Rodrigues
de Castro. The church should have received the name of São José, but was abandomned in the middle of the works and, only later, finished by
Castro, then, receiving his name.
In one of the church’s rooms worked the Roda dos Enjeitados, where new born
children were abandoned by mothers who either didn’t want them or couldn’t afford raising them.
The place received a bell, provided by the vicar of Alcântara in 1833. Soon after,
the original pieces from Portugal were restored. Today it has some valuable objects of Santa Severa, brought to Brazil in 1852 by Friar
Dronero.
