In colonial style, the house that houses "Museum of Visual Art" of São Luís is
covered with portuguese glazed tiles and is part of the architectonic complex of São Luís protected by IPHAN, Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e
Artístico Nacional (National Historic and Artistic Patrimony Institute). It’s located at Rua Portugal, one of the most important streets in the
old historic center of São Luís.
Besides being responsible for keeping the pieces that show a sample of Maranhão’s
culture, Museu de Artes Visuais also offers to the visitors the chance of knowing the work of several local artists of various epochs. It
periodically promotes painting and sculpture exhibits, besides displaying samples of french, portuguese and german glazed tiles.
