The June celebration in Maranhão starts at June 13th, Day of Santo
Antonio, and continues until June 30th, with the celebration of Day of São Marçal. Besides the typical dances, the main prominences of this
regional carnival are the typical shows of the folkloric culture of Maranhão.
It’s commom to watch presentations of Bumba-Meu-Boi, the most traditional popular
manifestation of Maranhão, and Tambor de Crioula. The city gets full of hamlets and most of the population participates lively in the
commemorations. One of the most exciting moments of the celebration is when, during the Day of São Pedro, all groups of Bumba-Meu-Boi that plays
in the isle go in procession to Capela de São Pedro, in the district of Madre Deus, to pay for granted wishes and honor the saint.
