Sound Box of Reggae |
In São Luís, the traditional axé and forró are not that popular as in the rest of
the northeast region. What the city really enjoys is to listen to and dance reggae.
O rhythm was introduced in São Luís during the 70’s and, since then, captivated a
growing number of fans. There are about 150 reggae clubs at the capital, usually crowded. The Jamaican sound is loved so much in São Luís that
the inhabitants already created new ways to dance, even in couples.
The reggae balls happen in places with huge speaker walls. The sound is commanded
by Radiolas, who are the different DJ teams. Beside traditional singers like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, local bands and also some bran-new bands
from Jamaica dominate the repertory.
