Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra
(Saint Antonio da Barra Fort)

It belongs to Brazil's navy and is located at Baía de Todos os Santos' northern
entrance. The construction was started out by Bahia's Capitania's first donor,
Francisco Pereira Coutinho, in 1536, originally tower shaped with ten sides. The
fort was re-built and amplified by Manoel Teles Barreto between 1583 and 1587,
and underwent alterations between 1602 and 1702, including its terreplein. It is
considered the first fortification ever built in Brazil and is home to the Museu
Náutico, a museum with maps, navigation equipment, old Portuguese and Spanish
ships' models, and remains of "Sacramento", which sank at Baía de Todos os
Santos' entrance.
