Forte de São Diogo
(São Diogo Fort)
This army fort is located at Morro de
Santo Antônio's base, right at Porto da Barra's right side. Built in the end of
the 16th century, this old palladium was amplified and transformed into a fort,
whose only aim was to stop invaders form landing at the only safe spot at Baía
de Todos os Santos' entrance, preferred by invaders who intended to attack the
city through the south. Its fire baptism took place in May 1638, while the
second Dutch invasion was happening, under Maurício de Nassau's command.
Concluded in 1722, it holds seven cannons in its curious terreplein, whose
unconventional shape follows, almost 100 percent close, the hill's outline,
taking advantage of the hillside on its construction.. Since it had an irregular
Italian project, there are a command house with two floors, and a doorway with a
coat of arms and a sentry box, although there have been many modifications in
its original form throughout the years. Nowadays, more than a historical
attraction that offers an exclusive view of Baía de Todos os Santos, this fort
is an important leisure center for visitors and inhabitants of the city.
