Forte de Santa Maria
(Saint Mary Fort)
This navy fort was built after the 1624 Dutch invasion, when
Portuguese governors had two fortifications constructed at Porto da Barra,
aiming at firing and stopping new disembarkings in the area. This fort,
completed in the 18th century, is home to an image of Nossa Senhora, and served
as a port markers' warehouse for many years. Its Italian heptagonal shape hasn't
undergone any modifications over the years, and access to the interior happens
through a bridge.
