Forte de São Pedro
(São Pedro Fort)
Its location was chosen by the Dutch in 1624 for a
fortification, and it was built between 1646 and 1723. It was strategically set
for the city's southwestern end's defense and its main goal was to stop invaders
landing at Porto da Barra from having access to the city. Its conception -
square shaped with four bastions outlined in the shape of a spear's end - was a
great advance for the time. There, the Brazilian army rebelled for the first
time against the Portuguese colonial government in 1822, starting the war for
independence.
