Forte
de São Marcelo (São Marcelo Fort)
Under IPHAN's protection, this fort
was originally triangle shaped, built in wood in the beginning of the 17th
century, on Salvador's port's entrance, on top of a reef. After the 1624 Dutch
invasion, it was re-built and changed to a round shape, gaining the mission of
protecting the inner city from sea foreign attacks. Access to it is done by boat
from Rampa dos Saveiros, next to Mercado Modelo.
Currently it is closed to visit. |
