Salvador - Forts - Forte de Santo Alberto

Forte Santo Alberto (Saint Alberto Fort)

This army fort is located on Avenida Jequitaia, in Cidade Baixa. It is better known as Forte da Lagartixa, because one of its cannons that had a lizard (lagartixa) drawn on its surface, was fired on July 2, 1822, announcing the departure of Portuguese troops commanded by Madeira de Mello and Bahia's independence. Its construction started on the second half of the 16th century, around the Old Torre de São Tiago, put down for the construction of the terreplein. The tower's archeological remains were recently discovered and can be seen by the public. completed in 1610, Forte de Santo Alberto, along with Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, integrated a defense system whose aim was to protect the northern city from land attacks. In the 1624 and 1638 invasions, it was occupied by the Dutch.
