Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo (Saint Antonio Alem do Carmo Fort)
Built on the second half of the
17th century, on the bastion that offered the best resistance against the
Dutch in the 1638 invasion, it served as a prison for important characters
in the 18th century's national political life. It suffered many
modifications from the 19th century on. Although it was never used in a war,
it is located on a strategical spot for the city's defense. The fort has
been home to a jail and to the Centro de Cultura Popular (Popular Culture
Center).
