Art Museu of Bahia |
Founded in 1918, “Museu de Arte da Bahia” is considered the oldest museum of the
State. It shows on its collection european and oriental ceramic pieces, jewelry, coins, photos, manuscripts and silvery from the 17th,
18th, and 19th century.
In 2002, BNDES (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social) sponsored an
exhibition about the restoration of portuguese glazed tiles from the 18th century. The glazed tiles belonged to “Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São
Francisco” and are an important part of the history of the baroque culture in Brazil. They carry a great value for historians, since they are
the only pieces left after the earthquake of Lisbon in 1755, incident that destroyed great part of the city. Even museums of Portugal don’t have
registers or pieces of the havocs on their collections. The event was realized in celebration to the anniversary of 50 years of the company.
The museum also receives incentives from the State Government of Bahia, which,
worried with other entertainment ways, specially turned to young people, started to broadcast a popularization and simplification campaign of
the name of old pieces to make it easy to the comprehension of visitors. It passed to also offer music, theater and poetry presentations to
attract new public, besides keeping the habitual visitors, since they have to struggle against other entertainment options, like movies and
shopping centers. The intention is to change the image that people have about museums, a vision of a boring, old and stagnant atmosphere.
